01 About
Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) sits at 1,700m in the heart of the Greater Caucasus. You can easily fill several days here — tackling the hike to Gergeti Trinity Church perched above the clouds, wandering into Truso Valley, pushing up to Juta, or visiting the ancient stone heads and the Soviet-era Monument of Friendship of Peoples along the Military Highway. It’s a place that rewards slow travel and returns visitors year after year.
- →Gergeti Trinity Church — 14th-century Georgian Orthodox icon perched at 2,170m
- →Stone heads & ancient monuments — distinctive carved figures and landmarks along the Military Highway
- →Monument of Friendship of Peoples — dramatic Soviet-era semi-circular monument with panoramic Caucasus views
- →Dariali Gorge — ancient Gates of the Caucasus, carved by the Terek river
- →Gudauri ski resort — 30min away, skiing Dec–Apr, panoramic gondola rides in summer
Best time: summer and autumn (June–October) for hiking and sightseeing. Kazbegi is accessible year-round, but mountain roads to Juta and Truso are snow-covered November–May. Nearby Gudauri (30min by car) offers world-class skiing Dec–Apr and breathtaking gondola views in summer.
02 Hikes
Kazbegi National Park offers some of the most rewarding hiking in the Caucasus. Below are three of the best routes — each very different in character, and all reachable from Stepantsminda.

Truso Valley
Follows the Terek river into a surreal landscape of mineral springs, travertine terraces and abandoned Ossetian villages. The highlight is a hot spring waterfall that turns the rocks vivid orange. Start early — no facilities on route.
Juta → Chaukhi Pass
Drive 15km from Stepantsminda to the village of Juta, then hike past glacial moraines to the foot of the dramatic Chaukhi rock towers — Georgia’s answer to the Dolomites. Clear views of Mount Kazbek on the return leg.
Lomisi
A trail to the medieval Lomisi sanctuary, one of the most venerated pilgrimage sites in Georgia. The route passes through alpine meadows with wide views of the Caucasus ridge. A quieter alternative to the busier Gergeti path.
03 Where to stay
A day trip from Tbilisi is possible (3h each way) but one day barely scratches the surface — we recommend at least 2 nights. Base yourself in Stepantsminda for walking access to the main sights, or in Gudauri (30min by car) for more hotel choice and better amenities. Most sights require a car regardless of where you stay.
Guesthouses
Family-run guesthouses in Stepantsminda are the classic Kazbegi experience — home-cooked meals, warm hospitality, from ~₾50/night. Book ahead in summer.
Rooms Kazbegi ★
The premium choice — a stunning glass-facade hotel with direct views of Mount Kazbek and Gergeti Church from every room. Worth every lari for a special occasion.
Gudauri hotels
Wider range, better infrastructure, ski-resort amenities. Ideal if combining Kazbegi with Gudauri’s gondola or slopes. Easy 30min drive to Stepantsminda.
Booking.com has the fullest selection for both Stepantsminda and Gudauri — search both locations when comparing options.
04 Transport
The best way to explore Kazbegi is by rental car or car with driver. The drive from Tbilisi via the Georgian Military Highway is spectacular in itself — Ananuri Fortress, Zhinvali Reservoir, the Jvari Pass — and reaching Truso Valley, Juta and Lomisi independently is only practical with your own wheels.
- →Rental car — from ~₾80–120/day, pick up at Tbilisi airport or city centre; 4WD recommended for Truso and Juta roads
- →Car with driver — ~₾150–250 for a full day including waiting time; convenient if you don’t want to drive mountain roads
- →Marshrutka — Tbilisi Didube station → Stepantsminda, departs ~10:00, ~3h, ~5 GEL; cheapest option but no flexibility
- →Shared taxi — departs when full from Didube, ~10–15 GEL, faster than marshrutka
- →Local 4WD taxis in Stepantsminda for Gergeti trailhead, Truso and Juta (~30–60 GEL per trip)

06 Tips for planning a summer trip
Best months
July and August for warm weather and snow-free passes. June and September for fewer crowds and greener landscapes.
Altitude awareness
Stepantsminda sits at 1,700m. Most trails climb well above 2,500m — take the first day easy if arriving from sea level.
Book guesthouses early
Weekends in July fill 2–3 weeks out. Midweek stays are easier to book and noticeably quieter on the trails.
Bring layers
Temperatures drop sharply after sunset and in storms. A windproof layer and rain jacket are essential even in summer.
Sun protection
High-altitude UV is intense. SPF 50 and sunglasses are non-negotiable — the glacier reflection makes it worse.
Local food
Guesthouse dinners are a highlight — Khinkali dumplings, Khachapuri, fresh trout from local streams, homemade wine and chacha.
