02 Off-piste possibilities

Wide open bowls above the tree line — safe, vast, and mostly untouched — make Gudauri one of the best freeride destinations in the Caucasus. The absence of cliffs and dense forest keeps the risk profile lower than most alpine resorts.

  • Mt. Sadzele bowl — main freeride playground, accessible by gondola
  • North face off Kudebi — longer descents, deeper powder after snowfall
  • Heli-skiing — available for accessing remote zones further into the range
  • Always check avalanche bulletins before heading off-piste — conditions change fast at altitude

03 Rentals

Multiple shops right at the base of the main lifts in both Old and New Gudauri. Book a day ahead during peak weeks to avoid queues.

  • Carving skis, powder boards, snowboards
  • Avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel)
  • Helmets, boots, poles — full packages available
  • Prices far below Alpine resorts

04 Ski schools

Certified instructors available on-site. Lessons run in English and Russian; some speak German and French.

  • Group lessons (adults & children) — 2–3h sessions
  • Private instruction for all levels
  • Kids’ school with dedicated gentle slopes
  • Book ahead — popular instructors fill fast

05 Parking

New Gudauri has the largest open-air lot near the gondola base. Old Gudauri has limited roadside parking. Both fill up fast on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Arrive before 10:00 on weekends or the lot will be full
  • Winter tires or chains mandatory on Georgian Military Highway
  • Road can close briefly after heavy snowfall — check conditions before departure
  • Shared transfers from Tbilisi are a practical alternative to driving

07 Tips for planning a winter trip

Best months

January and February for the most reliable snow. Early March for spring powder with fewer crowds.

Getting there

~2h from Tbilisi via Georgian Military Highway. Shared transfers daily. Road can close after heavy snowfall.

Sun protection

High-altitude UV is brutal even on overcast days. SPF 50 and quality goggles are non-negotiable.

After the slopes

Hot Khinkali, cheesy Khachapuri, local wine — then DJs and craft cocktails in New Gudauri as the sun sets.

Book early

Peak weeks fill fast. Lock in accommodation and transfers 4–6 weeks ahead.

Cash

Bring GEL. ATMs in New Gudauri but queues form on busy days. Some vendors don’t accept cards reliably.
